Bruce On Bennett Reviewed by In Tune International Magazine!
Eddie Bruce gives a beautiful well-deserved vocal tribute to Tony Bennett on this CD. It’s uncanny how often he sounds like Tony, and with only a Trio as backup. His ‘WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?’ (Segal/Wells) really starts things off. It’s a very hip song devoted to problems in early dating experiences to which he can really relate.
‘EMILY’ (Mercer/Mandel) is performed almost as a whisper with fine solo by pianist Tom Adams. ‘THAT OLD DEVIL MOON’(Harburg/Lane) is a swinging treat. Notice his last long held note midway and at the end. They are both unreal.
In addition to the thirteen standards there is a beautiful ballad ‘BUT BEAUTIFUL’ (Burke/Van Heusen). Eddie is aided here by guitarist Rudy Troccoli. It’s an artistic, emotional, pleasant way to conclude a skillful CD.”"”"”"”
